I don't just build fitness programs. I build pyramids — but I build them with concrete and steel. And before we pour anything, we carry the bags to the site together.
That's how Rocco Bergin has approached every client relationship for over 15 years — and it's the founding philosophy behind Modern Fitness & Performance. Real results require real foundations. No shortcuts. No gimmicks. Just honest, science-backed work that prepares your body for whatever life demands of it.
A Career Built From the Ground Up
The Beginning: New York Sports Club, Age 16
Most coaches talk about passion. Rocco lived it early. At 16 years old, he earned his first personal training certification and began working at New York Sports Club — not as a summer job, but as the start of a calling. While his peers were figuring out who they were, Rocco was already learning how human bodies move, adapt, and transform under intelligent programming.
The Athlete: College Baseball at URI
Rocco went on to compete in college baseball at the University of Rhode Island, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and Exercise Science. The athletic experience wasn't just biographical — it shaped how he coaches. He understands performance from the inside, what it takes to train through a season, manage fatigue, and peak when it matters.
Manhattan: Chelsea Piers and the Professional Standard
After college, Rocco planted himself in one of the most competitive fitness markets in the world: New York City. He built his career at Chelsea Piers, one of Manhattan's most prestigious athletic facilities, working as a Personal Trainer, Physical Education Supervisor, and Group Fitness Instructor. The standard in that environment was uncompromising — and it became his standard. Every assessment, every program, every coaching cue had to be earned.
Austin and the Graduate Degree
When Rocco made the move to Austin, he didn't coast on his reputation. He went back to school, earning his Master of Science in Applied Exercise Physiology and Kinesiology from the University of Florida — one of the top exercise science programs in the country. It was a deliberate decision: to deepen his understanding of the science so that every training decision he makes is grounded in evidence, not instinct alone.
Generator Athlete Lab: Leading a Team
Rocco served as Director of Fitness at Generator Athlete Lab, one of Austin's premier performance and recovery facilities. He wasn't just training clients — he was recruiting, developing, and mentoring coaches, building systems, and setting the standard for what evidence-based fitness looks like at an organizational level. That experience is now the blueprint for MFP.
Founding Modern Fitness & Performance
MFP was created with a singular purpose: to establish what a personal trainer should actually be. Not a motivator with a whistle. Not a generic program printed off the internet. A true coach — credentialed, curious, and committed to the long game. Rocco built MFP as the answer to a fitness industry that too often prioritizes volume over depth.
The Philosophy: Building Pyramids
I tell every client the same thing: we're building a pyramid — but we're building it with concrete and steel. Before we pour anything, we carry the bags to the site. That's the prep work most people skip. That's where we start.
Rocco's approach centers on longevity performance — the belief that true fitness isn't measured by how you feel at 30, but by how capable, resilient, and independent you remain at 60, 70, 80, and beyond. That means building movement quality before chasing numbers. It means earning the right to load before loading. It means training smarter so you can train longer.
His programming draws from exercise physiology, strength and conditioning, corrective exercise, and healthspan research. Every session has a purpose. Every program has a progression. And every client relationship is built on the understanding that sustainable results take time — and are worth every minute of it.
The Results: Client Stories That Say It All
The 78-Year-Old Who Redefined What's Possible
One of Rocco's longest-standing clients is a 78-year-old man who hex bar deadlifts twice his own bodyweight, performs pull-ups and push-ups with clean form, and jumps rope with the ease of someone half his age. He didn't arrive that way. He was built that way — brick by brick, year by year — through Rocco's systematic approach to strength and movement quality. He is, as Rocco puts it, prepared for whatever life throws his way.
The 93-Year-Old Who Found His Old Self Again
Perhaps the most profound story in Rocco's coaching career is a 93-year-old client who came to him having lost the physical vitality he once knew. Through a carefully designed program — including what has become a beloved weekly ping pong practice as both cognitive and physical training — this client has become measurably stronger, more toned, and more himself. He moves with confidence. He engages with the world. He is proof that it is never too late to build.
A Decade of Trust
Three of Rocco's current clients have been training with him for over ten years. In an industry where churn is the norm, that kind of loyalty speaks louder than any credential. These aren't clients who found a trainer they liked — they found a coach they trusted with their health, their goals, and their future.
